Is Your Gut Health Holding You Back?
Did you know that around 80% of your immune system lives in your gut? That means if you’re constantly picking up colds, feeling run down, or struggling to shake off bugs, your gut health could be playing a big role.
Even as we move into spring (although it was snowing this morning!) our gut health remains just as important so that we can continue to fight off viruses and infections.
So, what can throw your gut out of balance?
🔹 Medications – Antibiotics are the biggest offenders, wiping out both bad and beneficial bacteria, leaving your gut in chaos.
🔹 Diet – A diet high in ultra-processed foods (UPFs), sugars, artificial sweeteners, unhealthy fats, and alcohol can lead to chronic inflammation and gut issues.
🔹 Stress – Ever had an upset stomach when you’re anxious? That’s because your gut and brain are deeply connected. Before meals, take 5 deep breaths to help your body switch into ‘rest and digest’ mode for better digestion.
🔹 Sleep – Poor sleep raises cortisol levels, which can contribute to leaky gut and mess with hunger hormones, leading to cravings for sugary and salty foods - not great for gut health!
My Top Gut Health Hacks:
1) Chew your food properly – Aim for 20-30 chews per mouthful to take the strain off digestion.
2) Eat a diverse diet – Try to hit 30 different plant-based foods each week, including herbs and spices.
3) Include gut-friendly foods – Garlic, onions, rocket and fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and miso.
4) Boost stomach acid naturally – Zinc-rich foods like broccoli, seafood, beef, pork, and pumpkin seeds help digestion.
5) Stay hydrated – Drink 2 litres+ of filtered water daily.
6) Make time to BREATHE – Just 5 minutes of deep breathing can help lower stress and support digestion.
Gut health isn't just about digestion - it’s the foundation of better immunity, energy, and overall well-being. Small changes make a big impact!
